How to Care for Your Soy Wax Candle (So It Burns Evenly and Lasts Longer)

A candle is meant to be enjoyed — not rushed.

With just a few simple habits, you can help your soy wax candle burn evenly, last longer, and create a better overall experience from the first light to the last.

Why Candle Care Matters

Soy wax burns differently than traditional wax. It has a lower melting point, which allows for a slower, more even burn — but it also means proper care is important.

Without it, candles can tunnel, burn unevenly, or lose their full scent potential.

A little attention goes a long way.

The First Burn Sets the Tone

The first time you light your candle is the most important.

Allow the wax to melt all the way across the surface to the edges of the jar. This usually takes 2–3 hours, depending on the size of the candle.

This prevents tunneling and helps your candle burn evenly for the rest of its life.

Trim Your Wick Before Each Burn

Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about ¼ inch.

This helps:

• Control the flame height
• Reduce soot and smoke
• Prevent excessive flickering
• Keep the burn clean and even

A wick that is too long can cause the flame to burn too hot, which may lead to uneven wax melt and a shorter candle life.

Burn for the Right Amount of Time

For best results, burn your candle for 2–4 hours at a time.

Burning for too short a time can cause tunneling.
Burning for too long can overheat the jar and affect performance.

Let the candle cool and reset before lighting again.

Keep the Wax Pool Clean

Before each burn, check for:

• Wick trimmings
• Dust or debris

Anything left in the wax can affect how the candle burns and may create unnecessary smoke.

Don’t Burn Past This Point — Here’s Why

For safety, always stop burning your candle when about ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom.

Burning past this point can cause the glass container to overheat.

This increases the risk of:

• Cracking
• Weakening of the glass
• In rare cases, the jar breaking or shattering

Leaving that final layer of wax protects both your space and the integrity of the candle.

Keep Your Candle in the Right Environment

Place your candle:

• Away from drafts or open windows
• On a stable, heat-resistant surface
• Away from anything flammable

A steady environment helps maintain an even flame and consistent burn.

A Better Burn, A Better Experience

Taking care of your candle isn’t about being precise — it’s about being intentional.

A properly cared-for candle will:

• Burn cleaner
• Last longer
• Smell better throughout its life
• Create a more consistent atmosphere

A Small Ritual Worth Keeping

At Ember & Etch, we believe candles are part of everyday moments — not just decoration.

Lighting a candle can mark the beginning of a slow evening, a quiet morning, or a gathering around the table.

Taking a few extra seconds to care for it ensures those moments unfold the way they’re meant to.
